I have been happy using the XAMPP Stack for a number of years but recently came across BitNami so thought I’d give it a try.
BitNami simplifies the process for setting up freely available open-source web applications. It provides a number of BitNami Stacks which are integrated software bundles that combine all the required components for a web application (web server, database software etc.)
Installing a BitNami Stack enables you to quickly get your packaged application running with no manual configuration necessary. They are self-contained and do not interfere with software already installed on your system – simply download and install the required Stack
There are 3 types of Stack available:
- Native Installers – to install on your own machine (available for Windows, Mac OS X ad Linux)
- Virtual Machine Images – include a minimal Linux installation and a BitNami Stack (available for VMware and VirtualBox)
- Cloud Images – for running a BitNami Stack in a cloud computing environment (available for Windows Azure and Amazon EC2)
The BitNami Native Installers are available either as stand-alone Stacks or Modules. If you only want to install one BitNami-packaged application, just download and install the Stack. It will contain everything you need to run the application. If you want to run more than one application, you can install several application Modules on top of it. That way, all of the BitNami-packaged applications you want to run will share a single instance of Apache, MySQL and PHP.
Available Stacks can be found at:
BitNami also provides a Cloud Hosting “helper” service which simplifies the process for launching applications to Amazon Web Services (AWS). This paid-for service does not include the charges from Amazon. More details at:
I installed the BitNami MEAN Stack (http://bitnami.com/stack/mean/installer) on my Ubuntu machine to deploy Node.js and MongoDB and had a working server within minutes. This Stack includes the components MongoDB Express, Angular, Node.js, Git, PHP and RockMongo.
